With health threat from the omicron variant, Reid renews request for payment of dangerousness for supermarket workers

With the omicron variant of COVID-19 causing a spike in cases, an Evanston City Council member has called for its proposed hazard pay for supermarket workers to be put back on the table because of the heightened risk they face.

Council Member Devon Reid, 8th Ward

Council member Devon Reid, 8th Ward, at the Jan. 10 City Council meeting amended a proposal that had not advanced in June of last year to apply to grocery store workers. He said these workers are “at increased risk to some of their colleagues, particularly their lower-wage colleagues, as vaccine mandates and vaccine passport requirements do not apply to grocery stores.

“We’re seeing hiring issues across multiple locations and industries, including grocery stores,” he said.
